30,000+ users; 100+ app features; IBM says projects up to 4x faster
Headline outcome
Challenge
Upstream leaders at PETRONAS needed quicker access to trusted production, drilling, safety and business information without searching scattered emails and files. Fragmented data systems slowed decisions across a geographically dispersed operation where information accuracy carries substantial financial consequences.
Solution
PETRONAS and IBM Consulting co-designed the UP web and mobile platform using design-thinking and a phased approach from senior management tools to wider enterprise use. The app connects trusted data owners, operational dashboards, notifications and action plans.
Outcomes
IBM reports over 30,000 users, more than 100 functions and claims that app users can complete some project activities up to four times faster. This is a scope-specific speed claim; user counts are deployment evidence rather than proof of higher production or net investment return.
Expert Insights
CASEFINDER EXPERT INSIGHTS — independent editorial analysis, not an IBM claim: For national visitor-intelligence platforms, a trusted single mobile interface can unify demand, travel alerts and operational actions. Require explicit data stewardship, access controls and use cases tied to concrete decisions; evaluate time to action, analyst trust and data freshness. Adaptation roadmap: establish the operating baseline and evidence owner, run a bounded implementation with matched pre/post data, document process and system dependencies, and assess skills, change management, data governance, user accessibility, cybersecurity, privacy, economic cost and legal requirements. Distinguish vendor claims, demonstrated outputs, actual business impacts and forecast benefits. Publish outcomes only after editorial review of baseline, measurement method and practical transferability; do not equate technology adoption with independent proof of success.
