Defense-sector IT / proactive observability
BWI
Headline outcome
Challenge
BWI operates mission-critical IT infrastructure for the German Armed Forces, spanning a very large on-premises application and asset landscape. Expanding service complexity and long hardware procurement lead times required improved insight into performance, proactive detection and resource capacity without sacrificing security sovereignty.
Solution
With IBM Expert Labs, BWI integrated IBM Instana Observability and Turbonomic with Red Hat Ansible and existing AIOps tools in a governed on-premises operational intelligence model. The deployment connects telemetry, resource recommendations and audit-controlled actions while keeping mission-sensitive automation subject to human oversight.
Outcomes
IBM reports around 30,000 actual or potential IT service disruptions annually avoided or proactively handled, with up to 35% potential unused capacity identified in specific environments. It describes delaying hardware procurement by up to 12 months where appropriate. 'Potential disruption' and 'potential capacity' should not be interpreted as counted customer outages or realized cash savings.
Expert Insights
Strong public-sector benchmark for sensitive, sovereign and high-availability national systems. Require precise classification of avoided incidents, incident replay, intervention logs, policy controls, capacity headroom and segregation of duties. Assess whether mission-specific restrictions allow third-party telemetry and verify the baseline behind counterfactual disruptions. EVIDENCE STANDARD: Figures and attributions originate from IBM's customer story and have not been independently audited for CaseFinder publication.
